When I reflect on my journey to becoming a keynote speaker for International Girls in ICT Day 2024, I am reminded of the Ubuntu philosophy: “I am because you are.” This profound statement encapsulates the essence of mentorship and leadership, values I hold dear and strive to promote in my work with Women in Technology in Nigeria (WITIN).

A Call to Action: The WITIN Mentorship Initiative

Earlier this year, Martha Omoekpen Alade, the visionary Executive Director and Founder of WITIN, invited the Girls Advisory Council to take part in a meaningful initiative. Members were encouraged to nominate or adopt a school for a Girls in ICT Workshop and Leadership Keynote event. As a passionate advocate for empowering young girls in STEM, I eagerly accepted the challenge, despite living in Dublin and balancing a full-time career.

The theme for this year’s celebration, “Leadership,” resonates deeply with me. It highlights the critical need for strong female role models in STEM careers and underscores the importance of equipping the next generation of girls with the skills and confidence to lead. I adopted a school in Nigeria and prepared a virtual keynote on leadership, ensuring my physical absence wouldn’t hinder my ability to contribute meaningfully.

My Leadership Keynote: Inspiring the Next Generation

In my speech, I focused on four core pillars of leadership that I hoped would inspire the girls:

1. Pursuing Excellence: I emphasized the importance of relentless dedication, discipline, and perseverance in achieving one’s goals. Faith in oneself and a higher purpose often fuels the journey to excellence.

2. Adaptability and Innovation: I encouraged stepping out of comfort zones, embracing new experiences, and being open to challenges as vital traits for innovation and personal growth.

3. Advocacy for Impact: Leadership isn’t just about personal success; it’s about championing positive change in society. I shared personal anecdotes to inspire the girls to make a meaningful impact in their communities.

4. Lifelong Learning: Finally, I spoke about the power of continuous learning to drive both personal and professional growth.

My recorded video was played during the workshops at schools in underserved communities across Nigeria, providing these young girls with insights on leadership while encouraging them to dream boldly.

WITIN’s Impact: Transforming Lives Through STEM

The 2024 Girls in ICT Day celebrations extended beyond my keynote, reaching underserved regions in Rivers, Edo, and Oyo States. WITIN, in partnership with organizations such as GIZ, NCC, Google, and the Edo State Government, provided training to over 285 girls in areas such as computational thinking, online safety, coding, robotics, leadership, and career orientation.

Hearing about the program’s outcomes filled me with immense pride. WITIN’s efforts align perfectly with my vision of empowering girls to see STEM as not only an educational path but a platform for transformation and innovation.

Celebrating WITIN’s Recognition: A Global Milestone

Adding to the year’s triumphs, I was thrilled to learn that WITIN had been awarded the Science Outreach Award by Nature, in partnership with The Estée Lauder Companies Inc. This prestigious recognition celebrates WITIN’s tireless efforts to provide hands-on STEM programs, mentorships, and resources to socio-economically disadvantaged girls in Nigeria.

As a Chemical Engineer who grew up in Nigeria, I have witnessed firsthand how education can transform a young girl’s future. This award validates the dedication of Martha Omoekpen Alade and everyone involved in WITIN’s mission to close the gender gap in STEM, inspire future leaders, and combat poverty through education.

A Journey of Gratitude

I am deeply grateful to have been part of this inspiring initiative. My heart is full knowing that the seeds planted through programs like these will grow into a brighter, more inclusive future. To every girl who participated, I hope you continue to strive, innovate, and lead with confidence. To the incredible partners, supporters, and the ever-inspiring Martha Omoekpen Alade, thank you for making this vision a reality. Together, we are creating ripples of change that will echo for generations.

Finally, I recognize that championing STEM education is not limited to girls alone but extends to all children, particularly those in underserved communities. Regardless of who you are or where you come from, it is essential to strive for excellence in all your endeavours and to “Persevere, for your future will use your present to mould what is yet to become.” – Mary Ajide
